Saltwater Fishing Kayaks Require Special Skills

Some folks think it is tough enough to pull in a 50 pound catch while standing on a 30-foot boat, but others demand the excitement of doing so in saltwater fishing kayaks. Laced into a form-fitting boat on the edge of the ocean looking for fish that may be as long as they are tall, those that swear by the saltwater fishing kayaks experience claim there is nothing better.

There are some things to remember about saltwater fishing kayaks and key to those is that you will not have a lot of room for storage. While typical saltwater fishing kayaks may be about 17-feet long and many will have two storage compartments, to access the space you have to be out of the kayak. Your fishing pole, tackle box and bait can be strapped to the outside of the kayak, but anything else you want to carry will be inside and inaccessible unless you get out of the boat.

Before you head onto the ocean in saltwater fishing kayaks, it is advisable to practice getting in and out of the kayak, in the water as well as exiting the craft while inverted. Balancing in saltwater fishing kayaks can also be tricky as you do not use your arms and legs, rather your rear end and torso and trying to do so while reeling in a large fish can be extremely challenging.

Storing Catch Can Be Tricky

Despite the challenges of staying upright, casting while sitting and bathroom breaks, finding a place to keep your catch in saltwater fishing kayaks can also be tricky. Unless you are the catch-and-release type, you will need to think about where to put your fish. Depending on their size and species, keeping them in the cockpit with you may not be advisable. A sturdy mesh bag that can be tied to the lashings near the front of the kayak can be helpful, as long as you keep it shallow so as not to create too much drag when paddling back to shore.

Many also advise when using saltwater fishing kayaks you carry two, two-liter bottles with you, one filled with fresh water and the other empty for bathroom breaks. Since there is no easy way to remove water from saltwater fishing kayaks, keeping the inside clean and dry is more important. Before you look to purchase your own kayak, you should try to borrow a friend’s and practice in a small lake in case you realize it is not something you can handle.
